How we went about making this bookshelf from idea to reality

The Solenoid

First off : how would we push the books ? We first tried to use the current 5v stepper motor we had. However, it would seem that we would have to have a stepper for every book we had. This seemed like a rather inefficient and expensive method. Abhijeet sir felt the same.

So we dropped the idea and switched to a solenoid pusher, which would be mounted on a gear track system that would take the solenoid to whichever region it wanted it to .

RFID TAGS

Next up is how would we go ahead and scan the books .We couldn't go ahead and mount a camera ,to detect book title after all.

The answer lay within our IED kit itself : the RFID reader .One reader can detect multiple tags : and both the reader and tags are a cheap investment for a bookshelf.

Gear and Track

Upon implementing the Idea stated above we took on strong motor to drive our solenoid and RFID scanner about : the 12V DC motor.Hooking it up to the L298 motor driver gave us the precision we required.

Fibre Glass

Building the prototype bookcase we used a fibre-glass material to keep a check on the working, and added a new partition between the books so that the viewers wont be able to view the wiring.

Compiling all the above components ,and to get an aethetically pleasing box : which contained the following items:

the solenoid , the rfid sensor , the motor

and of course : the integrating factor:

The Arduino

We finally have the project ready and set to go .
